Nephrology
Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is one of 13 specialist
centres for Paediatric Nephrology in the UK, and we share the care
of children across South West with dietitians working in local
hospitals The specialist Renal Dietitians are part of the Regional
specialist multidisciplinary team consisting of consultant
paediatricians, specialist nurses including the dialysis team,
pharmacy, social work, psychology and a play specialist.
The renal dietitians provide a service to
Inpatients and Outpatients with renal disease across the region.
This includes regular ward rounds, weekly clinics, quarterly growth
clinics and priority community visits where possible. Geographical
restraints across the whole South West mean patients cannot always
be seen by a renal specialist dietician, so part of our work is to
train and support the patient's local dietician to enable quality
dietetic care closer to home.
The renal dietitians are also members of the Paediatric Renal
Nutrition Interest Group (PRING) of the British Dietetic
Association.
A complex renal diet can be very difficult to follow and our aim
is support children and their families to ensure they can
understand and children can follow dietary advice alongside medical
treatments. This will enable them to achieve good blood levels,
achieve the best possible growth and contribute towards overall
health and wellbeing.
