Cardiology
Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is one of the leading
specialist cardiac centres for children diagnosed with cardiac
disease in the UK. The cardiac dietitian provides an
inpatient service to children admitted across the region from the
critical care unit through to the HDU and the specialist cardiac
ward. We share the care of children across the South West
England and Wales with Dietitians working in local hospitals and in
the community. The Dietitian works in close collaboration with
regional specialist paediatric cardiac Dietitians who meet
biannually to update and develop best evidence based practice for
nutrition management of children with moderate to severe cardiac
complications.
An integral part of our service is to develop,
train and support the parents of cardiac children from breast
feeding and enteral nutrition support, through to complicated diets
such as the Low LCT fat diet for Chylothorax management. We
liaise with local and community Dietitians to enable quality
dietetic care into the home, to achieve the best possible growth
and development to enhance pre and post-operative nutrition
status.
