Clinical Outreach Team
Our Paediatric Critical Care Outreach team are experienced
children's nurses with a critical care background. This means they
have all worked in areas such as intensive care, high dependency or
the emergency department.
Their role is to provide support in all areas to care for
children who are very unwell, or whose condition has deteriorated
and may require extra care. They will advise and educate where
required and will support staff with appropriate escalation of
patient care. The team works in partnership with the
multi-professional team to ensure all acutely ill children in the
hospital have timely and appropriate care.
There are a number of different reasons why the team may become
involved in your child's care:
- If your child's observations, such as heart rate, breathing
rate and blood pressure, are outside of normal limits.
- If your child has been discharged from the paediatric intensive
care unit (PICU) or the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to a
ward or bed. They will be followed-up for 48 hours, even though
they may not be acutely unwell.
- If your child is being cared for in a high dependency bed.
- If your child is receiving certain types of oxygen
therapy.
The team will help to ease your transition to the ward and
provide you and your child support. You may also see them on the
wards and children's emergency department assisting in emergency
situations.
