Researcher elected fellow of the Royal College of Nursing

Professor Sarah Hewlett from the University of the West of England, whose clinical practice is based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). It is the first time that this prestigious title has been awarded to a nurse at the University of the West of England.

Chief Medical Officer to officially open Biomedical Research Unit

A state-of-the-art facility that will carry out leading research into heart disease and inspire collaboration between scientists and clinicians for the benefit of all patients will officially open later this week.

Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Advisor for the Department of Health and the NHS, is to visit the Bristol Heart Institute on Thursday 7 April to officially open the Bristol Biomedical Research Unit in Cardiovascular Disease.

Major new trial in Bristol to prevent blindness in children with arthritis

Doctors at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children are planning a major UK-wide clinical trial which they hope will prevent blindness in children with arthritis.

Up to 25 children with arthritis will be recruited onto the trial at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children from the summer.

Scanner helps Bristol team lead the way in Cancer research

The delivery of a Veridex Circulating Tumour Cell (CTC) Scanner at the School of Clinical Sciences at Southmead Hospital is providing an exciting opportunity for a team of Bristol scientists and clinicians, to undertake potentially groundbreaking research into what controls cancer tumour cells and causes them to spread around the body.

Using a newly developed test called the CellSearchCTC test the scanner has the potential to provide the means for more accurate measurement of cancer progression so that appropriate treatments are given.

Safe and Sustainable review of Childrens Heart Surgery Services consultation events

In 2001, the Kennedy Report recommended the need for fewer specialist centres for childrens heart surgery. In response to this recommendation the national Safe and Sustainable review of childrens heart surgery services was established to ensure that babies, children, young people and their families receive the best possible outcomes.

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is one of eleven centres in England to perform this type of highly specialised surgery for children from across the South West of England and South Wales.

University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust To Elect New Governors

University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is holding its election for Governors to its Membership Council, for a three-year term from June 2011.

The role of a governor is to understand and reflect the views and needs of their constituents in order to provide comment, advice and guidance to the Trust when setting strategic plans. Governors statutory duties are outlined in the Trusts Constitution.

We are delighted that Bristol Royal Hospital for Children has been included in all recommended options for the designation of paediatric cardiac surgery services by the National Specialist Commissioning Group.

Help your hospitals to beat norovirus

University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is reminding anyone who has experienced symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting in the previous 48 hours to avoid going to its hospitals.

Visitors
The Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Heart Institute are restricting visiting times to an hour a day between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. In addition, only two visitors are allowed per bed with no change of visitors during a visiting session. Restrictions are under constant review.

Health Minister visits University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust

Health Minister Paul Burstow today (Thursday 3 February) visited University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust to talk to staff and patients about a new Government health campaign.

˜Be Clear on Cancer is the first ever Government cancer awareness campaign to highlight the early signs and symptoms of bowel cancer. It is being piloted in the South West and East of England and, if successful, will be rolled out across the country.
