Clinical research teams have been raising awareness of research
by showcasing their studies and holding information stands and
interactive events for both patients and staff. Many
different specialties were represented: intensive care -
ophthalmology including cataracts - women's and children's research
including vaccines, paediatric cardiac and paediatric oncology -
adult cardiology - cardiac surgery - and themes from the Biomedical
Research Centre (BRC), Mental Health, Surgical Innovation,
Nutrition and Cardiovascular. On the Paediatric stands there
was a spinner game demonstrating randomisation, and an animated
video of the circulatory system. The eye hospital team offered the
opportunity to try on some simulation glasses which show what it's
like having some of the common eye diseases. Cardiology
offered blood pressure checks and displayed a timeline of landmark
studies that have changed clinical practice. The BRC themes
were represented by PhD students showcasing their exciting projects
and the Cardiovascular team showed some 3D hearts and examples of
valves. Many of the teams also held bake sales to raise money
for various charities.
Our researchers lead and contribute to world class research
which helps us to understand diseases better and develop new
treatments for the benefit of patients and the NHS. Providing
healthcare, research and teaching of the highest quality to improve
outcomes for patients is at the centre of what we do at UH Bristol.
Research is embedded in the care we provide, and we aim to offer
the chance of taking part in research to as many of our patients as
we can.
