Dr Robert Marshall
BSc (Hons) MB BS CertMedEd FRCP FHEA
Training:
I qualified from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's
and St Thomas's Hospitals in London in 1996, gaining a First Class
intercalated BSc in the History of Medicine along the way.
After 2 years of working in London, I undertook a medical
rotation in Plymouth. Interest in rheumatology developed during
that time, and after completing the Membership of the Royal
Colleges of Physicians in 2000, I embarked on higher specialist
training in Rheumatology the following year.
An initial post as a Specialist Registrar at the Bristol Royal
Infirmary led to an interest in teaching, and in 2002-3 I undertook
a post as a Clinical Fellow in Musculoskeletal Medical Education at
the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, and the
University of Bristol. I subsequently competed a Postgraduate
Certificate in Medical Education, and became a Fellow of the Higher
Education Academy in 2006. For several years I had a major
involvement in undergraduate medical education, and was Deputy
Academy Dean for the South Bristol Academy of the University of
Bristol Medical School from 2012 - 2018. Over the same period I was
also an Educational Supervisor for Rheumatology trainees.
After completing rheumatology training in Portsmouth,
Bournemouth and Poole, I worked as a Locum Consultant in Portsmouth
before taking up my post as Consultant Rheumatologist at the
Bristol Royal Infirmary in 2006. In 2014 I took over the role of
Clinical Lead for Rheumatology at University Hospitals Bristol.
Areas of interest:
I am a General Rheumatologist and am happy to see patients
across the spectrum of rheumatic diseases, although leave
osteoporosis work to my colleagues. I have experience in the
diagnosis and management of rheumatoid arthritis,
spondylarthropathies, and connective tissue diseases.
