Paediatric Urology

Description of service

We provide a comprehensive specialist outpatient's service for the management of all secondary and tertiary paediatric urological conditions for the South West region covering a total population of nearly five million. This includes a network of outreach clinics so that patients can be seen close to home. These currently take place in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Swindon, Yeovil, Taunton, Exeter, Barnstaple, Torbay, Plymouth and Truro.

We have close links with paediatric urology in Southampton offering treatment of rare conditions such as disorders of sex development at a supra-regional level.

Conditions treated

  • antenatally detected kidney and bladder abnormalities (eg hydronephrosis - swelling of drainage system of kidney)
  • Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) formerly known as "Intersex"
  • undescended testes
  • hypospadias (a condition where the uethral orifice is on the underside of the penis
  • spina bifida
  • vesico-ureteric reflux
  • varicocoele (varicose veins above the testicle)

  • laparoscopic nephrectomy, heminephrectomy and pyeloplasty
  • surgery for DSD including feminizing genitoplasty
  • hypospadias repair including Snodgrasss and Bracka techniques
  • urinary reconstruction including bladder augmentation, bladder neck reconstruction, bladder neck sling, artificial sphincters and Mitrofanoff procedure
  • open and laparoscopic orchidopexy
  • laparoscopic palomo procedure for varicocoele
  • cystoscopic deflux injection for vesico-ureteric reflux (www.deflux.com)
