Who we are

Based at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, the department provides general anaesthesia for children undergoing a wide variety of operations and procedures. 

We also provide pain relief for children on the ward, even those who have not had an operation. The acute pain team operates 24 hours a day. 

What is an anaesthetist? 

Anaesthetists are highly trained specialist doctors. After medical school, anaesthetists typically train for nine or more years before becoming consultants. All of the consultant anaesthetists at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children have received additional training in the care of children, including fellowship positions in major teaching hospitals around the world. 

The anaesthetist administers the medicines which make your child go to sleep. They will stay with your child throughout the operation to make sure that they are safe. They will continue to administer anaesthetic medicines as well as painkillers and any other medicines which your child requires.
