What is cardiac rehab?

What is cardiac rehab?

Cardiac rehabilitation is an evidence-based exercise, education and relaxation programme, tailored to the individual. This can help create a positive impact on their wellbeing and quality of life.

Following a cardiac event you will be referred to your local cardiac rehabilitation team. The team will assess you and discuss the cardiac rehabilitation options which are appropriate for you. You will be given guidance and support on how to exercise safely and effectively. You will also receive lifestyle education including dietary advice and you will have the opportunity to ask questions.

What are the benefits of cardiac rehab?

Cardiac rehabilitation helps to manage the risk factors of coronary heart disease and reduces the chance of hospital readmissions and further heart events.

Cardiac rehabilitation can also improve your;

  • Confidence and help you return to normal life after a cardiac event.
  • Understanding of your heart condition and your medications.
  • Cholesterol, diet, blood pressure and body weight.
  • Health, wellbeing, quality of life and life expectancy.
