Direct Messaging

Throughout September, we ran a pilot for a new service where we offered selected patients last-minute appointments via text message.

This involved the Haemophilia service at Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre and the Paediatric Audiology service at St Michael's Hospital.

We are currently reviewing feedback from the pilot before we make a decision on rolling out the service across the Trust.

How does Direct Messaging work?

  1. When short-notice appointment slots become available, selected patients will receive a text message from (07860 039092). The text message will contain a link directing you to the DrDoctor Patient Portal. This is a secure online site where you can view information about your appointments.
  2. To make sure we are speaking to the right person, we are required to do standard patient verification checks at the beginning of every conversation. You will be asked for;
    - Forename and Surname
    - Date of Birth
    - Postcode
  3. Once we have completed our verification checks, you will be able to directly reply, receive, and send further communication about an appointment via the DrDoctor Patient Portal. Please note: this is not an instant chat service, messages are checked regularly by booking teams but not always answered immediately, so this service should not be used to discuss urgent health problems. For health information contact NHS 111 or your GP.
  4. Once the appointment slots are filled, on a first come first served basis, the communication link is closed to further responses.

Please note

SMS text notifications will come from 07860 039092.

Appointments will be filled on a first come first serve basis. We are partnering with DrDoctor to deliver this service.

You will only be able to receive text message notifications if we have your mobile phone number on our system. Please contact the Appointments Team on 0117 342 6888 to check we have your most up-to-date contact details.

Requests to cancel or change an appointment can still be made by calling the number on the patient's appointment letter or via an online form on the UHBW website.
