NHS research, support and treatment costs

The Department of Health requires that NHS costs are split into three categories: research, support and treatment. See  Attributing the costs of health and social care research - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) for further information.

The aim is to clarify the distinction between research costs, NHS support costs and treatment costs in relation to activity specified in the research application/protocol; and to help attribution between the NHS and external funder of:

  1. patient related activity
  2. clinical staffing and
  3. placebos and medicines

AcoRD defines the costs as:

Research Costs:

- the costs of the research and development itself that end where the research ends. They relate to activities that are being undertaken to answer the research question.

NHS Treatment Costs:

- the patient care costs, which would continue to be incurred if the patient care service in question continued to be provided after the research study had stopped.

NHS Support Costs:

- the additional patient care costs associated with the research, which would end once the R&D study in question had stopped, even if the patient care involved continued to be provided.
