Maternity triage unit
Our maternity triage area is found within the Central Delivery
Suite on level C at St Michael's Hospital. The unit is open 24
hours a day, seven days a week and is staffed by senior midwives,
obstetric doctors and maternity support workers.
Maternity triage uses the Birmingham Symptom-Specific Triage
System (BSOTS) which uses a standardised initial assessment and
pathways to identify and prioritise women who require more urgent
attention. This means everyone will be seen initially then assessed
according to your clinical need and severity of your symptoms,
rather than the time of your arrival. This is to ensure that
emergency admissions are seen as a priority for the health and
safety of both parent and baby.
Reasons to attend include (but are not limited to):
- high blood pressure
- concerns about your baby's movements
- suspected pre-term labour
- vaginal bleeding or abdominal pain
When you arrive in triage, please inform the ward clerk of your
arrival along with your name and hospital or NHS number.
