We request that where possible, you bring a morning urine sample
to your appointment.
When you arrive for your appointment, you will need to check
into our main reception desk. You will then be taken to the clinic
waiting area before undergoing a brief consultation with one of our
healthcare staff. This is likely to be a Healthcare Support Worker
(HCSW) who will review your symptoms and referral. You may be asked
to give a urine or blood sample.
You will then have a vaginal or abdominal ultrasound scan with
one of our sonographers. This normally takes 20 minutes and may
require that you undress from the waist down. (Please note that
whilst you may have been given an appointment for a scan the
clinical need for one will be assessed on the day and may not be
necessary.)
Following the ultrasound scan, you will be seen by a nurse or
midwife practitioner. If you have not had a scan, it may still be
necessary to see a nurse or midwife practitioner, our HCSWs will
advise on this. You will discuss the scan outcome or early
pregnancy symptoms and be advised on any further treatment or
follow-up appointments required. This is a private conversation
where you will be given the opportunity to ask any questions.
Please note that there may be a wait for your scan or to be seen
by a nurse/midwife practitioner at busy times. Your visit may take
up to 2-4 hours and you may be asked to come back to the clinic on
a different day for further investigations.
You are encouraged to bring a friend or family member for
support, however, due to the nature of the clinic, it is not a
suitable environment for very young children.
Please note that we are a teaching hospital therefore we
regularly have medical students, student nurses and student
midwives observing the clinic. If you would prefer not to have a
student present, please inform the team on your arrival.
