What is Alright My Liver?
Liver disease can be present without any symptoms for many years. We want to diagnose liver disease as early as possible to give people with liver disease the best chance of recovery. Alright My Liver are outreach events aiming to bring focused liver health checks to the South West.
Liver disease can be caused by lots of different things. Among the commonest are:
Alcohol consumption over many years (alcohol related liver disease)
Too much fat stored in the liver - often alongside conditions like type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure (non-alcoholic or metabolic associated fatty liver disease)
Viral hepatitis
What will happen at my visit to Alright My Liver?
We will ask you some brief questions that help us work out whether you are at risk of liver disease.
If we think you are at risk of liver disease, we will offer you a FibroScan. This is a bit like an ultrasound scan, is painless and takes less than 10 minutes. It gives us an indication of liver stiffness which can help to tell whether your liver is becoming scarred.
If we think you are at risk of a viral hepatitis you will be offered a saliva or pinprick blood test for this.
Depending on the results of the above assessments, you will be offered advice and possibly further input from our liver specialist teams. All of this is optional and will be tailored to you.
What happens if I am found to have liver disease?
If your results are concerning for liver disease you will be offered an appointment with our specialist team, and probably some further blood tests and/or a scan. We will support you through this process and provide you with all the information you will need going forward. There are lots of things we can do to help improve your liver health once we know you have a problem, so it's always better to know sooner.
