The Observatory - E307
About Us
The Observatory is a short stay observation unit that can care
for up to eight patients using three cubicles and five bays on the
main ward. We try not keep children in hospital any longer than we
need to and will constantly reassess every case. If it becomes
apparent that your child will need a longer hospital stay they will
be transferred to one of the main hospital's inpatient wards.
Philosophy of the ward
Although we do not keep patients on The Observatory for as long
as other wards we like to make sure that all the children who visit
us receive a high standard of care and have as positive an
experience as possible. We allocate nurses to each patient staying
on the ward and you will be seen by either someone from our
Children's Emergency Department team or one of the hospital's
specialist teams.
Parent and Patient Facilities
We will provide snacks and drinks for children staying on the
unit as well as meals at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We ask that
you make sure your child is okay to eat and is not nil by mouth
(for example, if they are waiting for a surgical
procedure).
For parents and carers there is a cafe in the level 2 reception
area of the children's hospital. As well as this there are a number
of options in the BRI welcome area including Costa, M&S
Foodhall, WHSmith and Boots; the BRI also has a restaurant on level
9. You can find a number of other shops and eateries both opposite
and a short walk away from the children's hospital.
There is a toilet and shower on the ward and a changing places
bathroom on level 5 of the hospital.
Play Facilities
Our hospital play team can visit you at your bedside and we can
also provide toys during your stay. Please ask your nurse to
arrange this. Each bedspace has a DVD player and you are welcome to
bring tablets or laptops from home.
