Ocean Unit - E608

About Us

Ocean Unit is located on level 6 of the children's hospital and looks after patients who require chemotherapy, day surgery, and supportive care related to oncological and haemotological disorders and bone marrow transplants. We mostly receive patients from the community and children will visit us from across the South West; patients will come to Ocean Unit for any treatment that is less than 10 hours long. We have 10 bed spaces that are split between 4 cubicles and 2 bays that each have 3 beds.

Philosophy of the Ward

We are keen on supporting parents and carers in keeping children safe and well at home during long and complex treatment plans. We constantly monitor our patients and are proactive in order to avoid hospital spells where possible. We work hard to support early discharges from Starlight and Apollo 35 wards. We want to provide a holistic care experience and this might mean you visit us before your treatment begins to get a better feel for the ward.

We are a nurse led service and the intention of this is to harmonise appointments and give us an opportunity to get to know our patients better.

Parent and Patient Facilities

We have a small parent kitchen which contains a fridge and microwave and toilets are available in the stairwells on every level. We provide drinks and snacks for any patients visiting the unit. There is a baby changing facility on the ward and a changing places facility of Level 5 of the hospital.

You can find a small cafe in the level 2 reception area in the childrens hospital. There is a Costa Coffee, M&S Foodball, Boots, and WHSmith in the BRI welcome area. The BRI also has a Deli Marche restaurant on level 9.

The cubicle beds all have TVs and there is one TV in each of the bays. We have DVD players available to borrow.

Play Facilities

We have a brilliant play specialist who is parted funded by CLIC Sargent and our play room in the reception area is suitable for all ages. There is also an oncology play session held in the main activity centre on level 5. You can ask your nurse or the play specialist for more information on this.

Other

We work very closely with the CLIC Sargent Community Nurses as our unit works much like an outpatients department and children will go home at the end of their days procedures.

We are closely linked with Starlight and Apollo 35 wards on level 7.
