About us
Daisy Ward is located on Level 5 of the Bristol Royal Hospital
for Children (Green Floor). It is ward with two sides and two
specialities.
A side is the paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU) for burns
and surgical patients. We care for children aged 0-17 who come here
as planned admissions. These patients come from the children's
emergency departmentor the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU).
There are 6 beds in the HDU and space for one parent to stay
overnight with each child.
B side is the paediatric burns ward. Here we care for children
aged 0-16 who come in as planned admissions. They may arrive from
our HDU, across the South West or via referral by our clinic
and burns outreach team. There are 4 cubicles on B side and space
for one parent to stay with each child.
Philosophy of the Ward
Length of stay can vary from patient to patient. We aim to
provide the highest standard of nursing care by working together as
a team using a multi-disciplinary approach. We recognise the
importance of patient-centred care, individualising our care to the
needs of each patient and their families.
Parent and Patient Facilities
Our parents' kitchen is situated next to Bluebell and Sunflower
wards on level 5. There is a microwave, fridge, freezer and hot
drink facilities. Our cubicles on B side all have en-suites. For
parents of children on A side the toilets are situated by the lifts
on level 5.
Play Facilities
Our play team work hard to create a fun environment for the
children and our play room is open to all patients. It is situated
on B side. Everyone is welcome to play but we ask that all children
are supervised by an adult whilst in the play room. We encourage
families to take toys and crafts into children's rooms if they
aren't well enough to visit the play room. We have sensory lights
which provide great distraction during treatments; these are
especially enjoyable for our babies and patients with complex
needs.
Day in the Life
I am a toddler on Daisy Ward. I wake up for my breakfast which
Mummy has chosen for me. Some days I will have a bath in the
morning with lots of bubbles and toys. I will have my dressings
changed under the bubble lights while listening to relaxing music.
I like to go to the play room to say hello to the play ladies and
see what toys I can play with. I try my best to eat my lunch and
dinner, but if I can't manage it I will have some milk down my
tube. Sometimes my physiotherapist will come and see me to make
sure I am moving everything as I should. I enjoy going for a walk
with my Mummy and Daddy in the afternoon and seeing what is
happening in the play centre. When I'm ready for bed, my nurse will
get me a bottle of milk ready for my sleep. My Mummy sleeps in a
bed next to mine in the night so she can comfort me if I wake
up.
