Before your appointment

shhepIf your child is under five years old please make sure you bring their red book to clinic as this contains important information about your child.

If you or your child have been in contact with or had any symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting in the 72 hours prior to your appointment please do not come to clinic. Please ring and cancel the appointment and we will arrange another appointment as soon as possible.

If your child is unwell on the day of the appointment please telephone us to inform us you will not be coming to your appointment. There is no dedicated parking at the children's hospital - please click here to see a map of the area.

Arriving in the outpatient department

When you arrive in the outpatient department please report to the reception desk. You will have been given an appointment time on your letter. Please be aware that some appointments take longer than others and this can delay the running time of a clinic. The reception and nursing staff will always keep you informed about any delays and if you have any concerns please do not hesitate to ask any of the staff.

Facilities

dogCarousel Outpatients has toilets with disabled access and baby changing facilities in the main waiting area. The main waiting area includes a well equipped play area and we are in the process of developing a separate teenage area. There is a hoist available in one of the larger clinic rooms and if required please ask a member of the nursing team. It also has a vending machine and water cooler but we recommend that you bring your own drinks and snacks in case your appointment is delayed.

There are vending machines in the children's hospital main reception on level 2, along with a WRVS Cafe which serves hot food and drink. There is WHSmith, Costa Coffee, M&S Foodhall, and a Boots in the main reception area of the Bristol Royal Infirmary next door.

Rainforest Outpatients is a smaller department and only has baby changing and toilet facilities.

There is a changing places facility on Level 5 on the way to Puzzle Wood (E518)

The appointment

frogYour appointment letter will have on the name of the consultant caring for your child.  Please be aware that our consultants work in teams and usually run their clinics with another doctor called a registrar. Therefore, you may not always see the consultant, but the consultant will always be kept informed of your child's care and treatment.

Many of the clinics we run are multidisciplinary so you may see a range of professionals during your appointment. These include specialist nurses, dieticians, physiotherapists and psychologists. Some of the clinics run this way aim to reduce the amount of appointments your child will require. By coming to a clinic you will get all the information and advice you require at one time.

Your next appointment

At the end of your consultation the doctor will tell you if you need to be seen again.  You will be given a form with this information on to hand in to reception and the receptionist will then arrange a suitable date and time for your child's next appointment before you leave.

Pharmacy

If the doctor prescribes any medication for your child they will give you a script to take to the Boots pharmacy located in the BRI building where it will be dispensed. Alternatively, if your prescription is non urgent you can opt to have it delivered to your nearest participating Boots Pharmacy. In order to do this you must specify this on the prescription and place your prescription in the 'Boots Drop Box' which is located in the main reception of the Children's Hospital Level 2. Please note these prescriptions will be delivered to your chosen store the next afternoon or Tuesday afternoon if left on a Friday.
