Support

Coping with radiotherapy

Many people, quite naturally, feel emotionally upset and frightened following the diagnosis of cancer. It may be difficult to adjust to what is happening. Finding out about your treatment may help you to understand your fears and help you to cope better. There is a wide range of help and advice available to support people who are affected by cancer at the BHOC. Please see the information below for some of the services we provide.

The BHOC information and support centre

The BHOC Cancer Information and Support Centre is a drop-in centre for anyone affected by cancer. It is full of information about cancer and treatments available in different forms including leaflets, booklets, audiocassettes, videos, DVDs and via the Internet. You will also be able to find information about sources of practical help and support to do with living with cancer. They also have a wig and headscarf shop and information about the "look good, feel better" sessions. Find out more about what support is available.

The Cancer Information and Support Centre is located next to the Main Reception on level 4 of the BHOC.

Opening Times:

Monday - Thursday: 9.00am - 5.00pm

Friday: 9.00am - 4.30pm

Helpline: 0117 342 3369

What other support is available?

Your clinical nurse specialist, the treatment radiographers and other healthcare professionals you may meet will all support you in any way they can. Further information and support can be obtained from the organisations and websites on the 'patient leaflets' page.

There are psychological health services at the BHOC specifically to support people affected by cancer. The services consist of the Cancer Information and Support Centre on level 4, and a team of clinical psychologists who work with patients when they are experiencing emotional or personal difficulties as a result of a cancer diagnosis.

You may feel you would like to talk to a psychologist or counsellor. If this is the case, please ask the team or at the Cancer Information and Support Centre about the services available within and outside of the hospital.
