Other Conditions
There are a number of different spinal conditions and some of the following are other reasons that you might be seen by the spinal team. You can talk to your team for more information about your specific condition.
Spondylolisthesis is instability of the spine where one of the vertebrae (bones in the spine) slips forward. This can happen anywhere in the spine but most commonly happens in the lower back. This can be a painful condition but can be treated. In some severe cases, surgical correction and instrumentation is required.
Prolapsed Disk or slipped disk as you may have heard it called can be a painful condition. This can happen anywhere in the spine but usually occurs in the lower back. It can cause back pain, numbness or tingling in your shoulders, back, arms, hands, legs or feet. It can also affect how you stand - you may have difficulty bending forward or standing straight. Prolapsed disks usually settle within six to eight weeks but on rare occasions further treatment is required to help, this can include surgical treatment.
Coccydinia is pain in the tailbone (the bone at the very bottom of your spine between your buttocks). Often this is caused by trauma, such as a fall and can cause tenderness, a dull achy pain and on occasion sharp pains. Usually this pain settles by itself and there are ways to help alleviate some of the discomfort (see under treatments).
Spinal Trauma is usually caused by a high impact force (fall from a horse, rugby tackle etc.), that can lead to injury in different parts of your spine. Most commonly this can result in a fracture (break in one or more bones in the spine). Treatment for spinal fractures can vary depending on the severity of the break and where in the spine this has happened.
