Cleft

Education & Work

Starting college and entering the world of work can be a big change for many people for many reasons. Being in an unfamiliar environment, meeting new people and learning new things can make you feel a bit lost and insecure, especially in the first few weeks and months of a new job or course. Give yourself time to adjust and remember it is a challenging time for most people. If you feel you need extra support at this time because of any cleft-related issues, such as feeling self-conscious about your teeth and speech, finding it hard to hear what is being said, or you are struggling with eating because of the way your jaws meet, please get in touch with the cleft service. They can see you to discuss any more treatment you may need or would like. You can also speak to one of the psychologists in the service if you feel this may be helpful. If you are employed and feel you are being unfairly treated because of your cleft condition, this is against the law, as stated in the Equality Act 2010. It is advisable to speak to someone in the organisation where you work, such as the Human Resources (HR) department, and ask for help and advice.
