Inherited
You may have a condition that is inherited. Our bodies are made up of lots of cells and genes that are inherited from our parents, these affect how we look from our hair and eye colour to how our bodies work. Sometimes there can be a problem or fault in a gene. If one of your parents has a fault then there is a 50:50 chance you might inherit this.
This can include heart conditions, some people might inherit a condition and not have any signs or symptoms but for others they may need treatment.
There are lots of different types of inherited conditions that can have an impact on your heart. Some of the more common ones include:
Inherited cardiomyopathies such as:
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Dilated cardiomyopathy
- Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy
Abnormal heart rhythms or inherited arrhythmias such as:
- Long QT syndrome
- Brugada syndrome
- Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia
- Progressive cardiac conduction defect
