Clinical trial discovers a new way to prevent children with arthritis and eye disease losing their sight

A trial funded by the charity Arthritis Research UK and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has discovered a drug combination that could help thousands of children with arthritis.

Recruiting Patients and Healthy Controls for Newborn Screening Research Study

Researchers at Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust are currently recruiting children and adult patients from Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, with the following Newborn Screening (NBS) disorders: Phenylketonuria (PKU), Medium-Chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (MCADD), Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), Isovaleric Acidaemia (IVA), Glutaric Aciduria Type 1 (GA1), Homocystinuria (pyridoxine unresponsive;HCU).

Researchers have found a new way of treating high blood pressure or hypertension by targeting aberrant nerve signals in the carotid bodies, which sit on the common carotid arteries on each side of the neck.

The team from St. Michael's placed the baby in a cooling suit that cooled her whole body from 37C to 33.5C. By cooling her whole body this effectively prevented any brain damage.

International Clinical Trials Day - 20 May 2016

Thanks to everyone who took part in this year's event.  UHBristol celebrated the day by showcasing how research is having an impact on patient care.  The event was aimed at patients and staff - anyone interested in finding out about research in the Trust, and those wanting to get more involved in supporting or running a study.
