UHBristol celebrated ICT Day this year with a research event
held in the Bristol Heart Institute atrium from 9am - 4pm, and with
information stands in clinical areas around the hospital.
Teams from various specialties around the
Trust showcased how research is having an impact on
patient care, with examples of trials along with
interactive and informative displays.
The event was aimed at everyone - patients and
staff - interested in finding out about research in the Trust, and
those wanting to get more involved in supporting or running a
study.
International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated around the world
each year on 20th May. It commemorates the
first ever clinical trial carried out by James Lind, a surgeon in
the British Royal Navy in 1747 comparing different agents
(including vinegar, seawater and lime juice) for their
effectiveness in treating scurvy.
Clinical trials have come a long way since then, and are the
best way of proving whether a new treatment is effective.
Research active trusts have better clinical outcomes and at
UHBristol we are keen to offer our patients the opportunity to take
part in research. Our strong collaborations with the
Universities of Bristol and the West of England, and with North
Bristol Trust, support us in leading and participating in research
in many different disease areas across all our clinical
divisions.
