Research

Research

We support and encourage research within the department through a number of different routes. Below are an example of what some members of staff have carried out:

  • PhD (part time over 5 years alongside clinical work)

* The response of lower limb deep vein thrombosis to anticoagulation therapy; resolution, recurrence and post thrombotic syndrome.

  •  Masters degree research projects

* A Thematic Analysis of Patient Experience and Outcomes of Venous Stenting for Occlusive Iliofemoral DVT.

* The value of hand-held Doppler with visual trace in interpreting challenging ankle brachial pressure index assessments.

* Outcomes of calf deep vein thromboses not treated with anticoagulants: a feasibility study.

* Contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the assessment of blood flow to the foot: a feasibility study in a normal population.

* To assess whether the addition of the Toe-Brachial (TBI) reduces the number of indeterminate peripheral arterial disease diagnoses amongst patients with diabetes: a service evaluation.

* Evaluation of the direct referral pathway of podiatry patients for duplex ultrasonography.

* Internal quality assurance, effect on clinical outcome in carotid stenosis assessment across the Bristol, Bath and Weston vascular network.

* An investigation into the efficacy of pre-operative long saphenous vein mapping using ultrasound for use in coronary artery bypass grafting to reduce vein harvest site complications.

* Developing duplex criteria for jugular vein assessment.

* Effect of patient positioning in the duration of venous reflux in duplex ultrasound for venous insufficiency.

* A comparison of magnetic resonance angiography, contrast angiography and duplex ultrasound in the diagnosis of lower limb arterial disease.

  •  Staff also regularly carry out local audit and service evaluation
