Placements
Student placements
As part of a teaching hospital, we pride ourselves on training
future members of our profession. We work in partnership with the
BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy programme delivered at
Marjon University in Plymouth. We deliver a range of placements
across our hospital sites in inpatient and outpatient settings.
Students work with adults with communication and swallowing
difficulties to develop skills, knowledge and experience. Some
of our previous students have gone on to work in our team once
qualified!
Previous students have said:
"The SLT team at UHBW are fantastic. They are all so
friendly, hard-working and such great communicators. They all made
me feel so welcome and were always happy to help. I am in awe of
the work that they do, they are constantly thinking on their feet
and coming up with the best approaches for their patients' care.
They have been first class educators in that they have gradually
encouraged me to take on new responsibilities and gain the
confidence that I need to achieve my competencies and establish the
skills that I will need as a therapist. I really liked being in a
hospital setting surrounded by so many different professionals
doing their jobs. It is amazing to see all the different
disciplines coming together and where SLT lies within them all. I
also felt particularly privileged to have had the opportunity to
witness instrumental assessments such as VFL and FEES, these have
been unique and educational events."
"Thank you so much! I loved my placement here so much,
you've all been so kind & welcoming. I really couldn't have
asked for a better SLT team to be placed with".
"Thank you so much for all you help and guidance over the
past three weeks. It has been a fantastic experience and I'm so
grateful to have had this opportunity"
We have a dedicated Professional Advisor in Clinical Education
(PACE) student coordinator within the team, and all team members
hosting placements have completed the placement educator training
at Marjon.
If you are due to begin a placement with us, we look forward
to welcoming you soon. Following your introductory email, you
should receive a 'Welcome Pack' with up-to-date information
regarding your placement and the site, plus recommended
reading.
Work experience placements
If you are interested in a career in Speech and Language
Therapy (SLT) and would like to know a bit more about what a
day-in-the-life might look like, we also offer work experience
placements.
This is a single day of shadowing in one of our adult teams at
either our Bristol or Weston sites and is open to those 16 years
and over.
Our adult teams cover inpatient and outpatient services across a
range of specialities such as voice disorders, brain injury, head
and neck surgery, critical illness, cancer and progressive
neurological conditions. A day of shadowing may involve spending
time on the hospital wards or in outpatient clinics. You
will have opportunities to learn more about a career as an SLT and
get the opportunity to meet patients who have swallowing and
communication disorders. You will see different assessment
and management techniques and may get the chance to meet other
members of the multidisciplinary team.
Please contact our work experience (WEX) administrator Beth via
email on elizabeth.higgins@uhbw.nhs.uk if you
would like to know more.
We look forward to hearing from you!
