Burns research
The Scar Free Foundation Centre for Children's Burns Research is
based at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and works
alongside the South West Children's Burn Service and local
universities. The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children sees up
to 1000 new burn referrals each year.
The Burn Research Centre was initially funded by UK charity The
Scar Free Foundation, which supported research studies within the
clinical management, psychosocial support and prevention themes.
Funding for current and future projects is sought through
individual grant applications, primarily through the National
Institute of Health Research (NIHR).
Team working is important to us, as a result the Centre has
partnered with not only other healthcare providers nationally but
with voluntary/charity agencies and patient groups too, with the
aims of delivering a patient-centred research programme. So that we
can provide measurable outcomes for real patient benefit, and
develop multidisciplinary research capacity in burns research.
A burn injury can be devastating to a patient and their family,
our research focuses primarily on how best to treat and support
them after burn injury. But we know that burns awareness and
prevention is just as important as treatment. As a result we have
close links with our colleagues in the burns prevention team.
This infographic shows our
work as a research centre in the first 5 years of funding. We hope
to carry on this valuable work for many years to come.
