Activity and lifestyle
All children aged 5 to 18
years should engage in moderate to vigorous activity for at least
60 minutes per day. Moderate intensity means you are warmer,
breathing harder, heart beating faster but can continue a
conversation. Some research has suggested that children and young
people should have no more than an average of 2 hours of screen
time per day. Setting boundaries around screen time is useful as
evidence shows that a higher time spent on screen time (in
particular watching TV) is associated with a higher body fat mass
and a higher intake of high-energy foods. Adding more activity
might also help reduce sedentary time.
Children under 5 should not
be inactive for long periods, except when they're asleep. Toddlers
who can walk on their own should be physically active every day for
at least 180 minutes (3 hours), this can include active play and
walking. This should be spread throughout the day, indoors or
outside.
