Coming into hospital can sometimes seem scary but there's no need to worry.

Things your parents and carers may need to know. 

What's the ward like?

Starlight Ward is on level 7 of the children's hospital which is the green floor.  We look after children who are receiving treatment for cancer.  

There are 10 beds for patients and looks after children up to the age of 12.  Older patients usually stay on Apollo 35.

We have five cubicles with bathrooms which we use to keep patients safe who might have an infection or might be very vulnerable, and the rest of the ward is divided into a five bedded bay where you will be able to see and talk to other patients.  

There is a bathroom for patients in the bay; the nurses will show you where it is.  

A parent or carer will be able to stay with you on the ward but there may also be accommodation available at CLIC or Sam's House.  Use the link above the photo to find out more.

 

Who will look after me?

The team includes nurses and nursing assistants, ward clerks, play leaders, a dietician, a pharmacist, community nurses, psychologist, social worker,  hotel services assistants and of course the doctors too. 
You might also meet some students who are training to be doctors or nurses. 

 

What can I do there?

We have a playroom with lots of toys for all ages. Our play leader can bring toys to the bed or you may like to go to the playroom. Your brothers and sisters are welcome to use the playroom with you.  If you are feeling well enough you can go to the play centre on level 5 to sessions which are specially set up for oncology patients. 

If you can't get to the playroom we may be able to bring a TV to your bedside.  We have a good selection of DVDs but if you wish to bring in your own, please label them with your name.  

You can watch this until 8 o'clock at night when it's time to get ready to sleep.  You might want to use headphones so that it isn't too noisy for the other patients around you.  You can ask the nurses to find some for you. 

 

Can people come and see me?

Visitors can come to see you between 11 o'clock in the morning and 8 o'clock in the evening, although you will need to have a break at lunchtime to eat. Please don't ask lots of people to come at once and make sure that no-one visiting you is unwell with a cough or cold or upset tummy.

 

Can I visit in advance?

If you're planning your visit to the hospital, you might want to come and see what the ward looks like before the day of your operation.  Your doctor might talk to you about this when you come to clinic, but if not, you can ask your parent or carer to arrange this for you by calling LIAISE on 0117 342 8065.
