About
Haemoglobinopathies are a group of blood disorders which include
sickle cell disease (SCD), thalassemia, and rare inherited
anaemias.
We are the haemoglobinopathy coordinating centre (HCC) for the
South West region for sickle cell disease. We are the specialist
haemoglobinopathy team (SHT) for sickle cell disease, thalassaemia,
and rare inherited anaemias.
The local adult patient population is about 110 sickle cell, 30
thalassaemia and 20 rare inherited anaemia patients; requiring
30-40 admissions per year, a weekly outpatient clinic, and multiple
day ward and same day emergency unit (SDEC) attendances.
The South West Region covers the following hospital trusts:

The National Haemoglobinopathy Registry (NHR)
The National Haemoglobinopathy Registry is a database of
patients with red cell disorders living in the UK. This new
database collects data which is required by the Department of
Health from Haemoglobinopathy centres. The central aim of the
registry is to improve patient care.
Letters with more detail about NHR were sent out to all existing
patients. New patients will receive a letter once they are
registered with us and have not previously been registered by a
different centre in England.
