Area 61

In Bristol we have a purpose built TYA inpatient and day care facility that offers accommodation appropriate for young people's needs. It opened in March 2014, funded by Teenage Cancer Trust. Many TYA patients contributed to the design of the unit and this is reflected in it being a warm and welcoming, safe place for your care. It aims to provide comfort, stimulation and control during long stays in hospital, with a range of ways in which you can stay connected to family and friends.

Watch the video tour, view our information leaflet or find out more about the unit below.

Area 61 is located in the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, part of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. It is close to the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

The TYA Ward Team

Our unit allows young people to be with other patients their own age, who are receiving treatment for all types of cancer and leukaemia. The unit is made up of an inpatient ward, a day care ward, clinic rooms and social space.

You will remain under the care of your specialist consultant and team whilst in the TYA Unit. The staff are all experienced in the management of cancer in teenagers and young adults. Care is however very much a team approach. Each ward is managed by a senior nurse and all of the nurses who work in our unit have chosen to work with young people with cancer, and have had extra training to do so.

Area 61 inpatient ward

On level six, we have dedicated inpatient ward.  It includes five large single ensuite rooms. Each room has a sofa bed for relatives or friends to stay overnight along with TV/DVD and plenty of storage space. These are there to make the experience of inpatient stays better.

There is also a large social space (the Chat Room) on level six where patients and their friends/relatives can meet and share experiences, provide support to each other or just unwind. There are facilities for gaming, films, pool, table football, sofas, a large dining area and a kitchen and importantly there is free WiFi throughout the Unit.
