Area 61
In Bristol we have a purpose built
TYA inpatient and day care facility known as Area 61 that
offers accommodation and an environment appropriate for young
people's needs. Area 61 opened in March 2014, funded by Teenage
Cancer Trust charity. Many TYA patients contributed to the design
of the unit and this is reflected in it being a warm and welcoming,
safe place for your care. It aims to provide comfort, stimulation
and control during hospital stays, with a range of ways in which
you can stay connected to family and friends.
Area 61 allows young people to be with other patients close to
their own age, who are receiving treatment for all types of cancer
and leukaemia. The unit is made up of an inpatient ward, an
outpatient day care ward, clinic rooms and social spaces.
Area 61 is located on levels 5 and 6 of the Bristol Haematology
and Oncology Centre (BHOC), part of University Hospitals Bristol
and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. It is close to the Bristol Royal
Hospital for Children, Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Bristol
Heart Institute.
