South Bristol Community Hospital and partners to hold first Hengrove Plaza street festival

On Saturday 8 June, South Bristol Community Hospital will be opening its doors to the local community as part of the Hengrove Plaza street festival.

The free street festival is taking place in and around Hengrove Plaza in South Bristol, in partnership with Hengrove Park Leisure Centre and City of Bristol College's South Bristol Skills Academy. Hospital partners Cofley and Bristol Community Health are also supporting the event.

From 11am - 3pm members of the local community are invited to come and have a look round the hospital, check out the facilities at Hengrove Park Leisure Centre and discover what courses are available at the neighbouring City of Bristol College's South Bristol Skills Academy.

Neina English, matron manager at South Bristol Community Hospital, said: "People in South Bristol campaigned for a local hospital for more than 50 years. This new hospital is testament to how the provision of healthcare is changing to provide the highest quality of care in modern NHS facilities closer to home, wherever possible. We have seen more than 75,000 people through our doors since we opened at the end of March 2012, and still have the capacity to treat more patients.

"South Bristol Community Hospital is an important part of the community and we are looking forward to being involved in the first Hengrove Plaza street festival together with Hengrove Park Leisure Centre and City of Bristol College's South Bristol Skills Academy. We are inviting the local community to come and meet us and to understand more about the services and facilities available here."

David Selkirk, general manager of Hengrove Park Leisure Centre, said: "Hengrove Park Leisure Centre has provided a fantastic facility for the community and I am looking forward to working in partnership with our neighbours to put on our first Plaza festival. We welcome everyone to try something new for themselves for the day."

University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a number of services at South Bristol Community Hospital including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dieticians, speech and language therapy, X-rays and scans. A new community dental service, offering free NHS treatment for local people, is provided by the University of Bristol Dental Hospital. The purpose-built, £45 million hospital also provides an Urgent Care Centre, run by Bristol Community Health, which delivers a walk-in service for minor illness and injuries; day surgery; and a rehabilitation service where people are able to stay as inpatients.
