Patients Praise Care At South Bristol Community Hospital
A Care Quality Commission review of South Bristol Community
Hospital (SBCH), carried out as part of routine schedule of planned
reviews, has shown that patients' privacy, dignity and independence
were respected.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) visited SBCH in August this
year and spoke to patients and staff on two rehabilitation wards.
Patients told the CQC that they were involved in decisions about
their care and discharge from hospital, that they liked the staff
and felt safe at the hospital. One patient said that they could not
fault the care at the new hospital "everyone has been so kind."
The inspection was part of a themed inspection programme by the
CQC to assess whether older people in hospitals were treated with
dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs were met.
The majority of patients asked commented positively on the food.
One person said: "could not wish for better even if I went to a
hotel, I have no complaints about the food." Another person said:
"I am asked what I would like to eat every morning and the staff
assist in completing the form for me, the food is generally very
good."
Neina English, matron manager at SBCH says: "This is a
reflection on all who've work so hard to open and make a success of
all of the services at South Bristol. I'm delighted that the
dedication and hard work of our staff is appreciated by patients
and families."
Chief Nurse Alison Moon says: "We are delighted that our
patients are so positive about the care they received at South
Bristol Community Hospital and that they were treated with respect,
dignity and involved in decisions about their care.
"Patients on the rehabilitation unit can often be recovering
from having a stroke and as a result can require assistance with
eating and drinking, so it is essential that they are supported and
not rushed during mealtimes. The review mentions the excellent
practice taking place at the hospital in this area and I'm
delighted to hear the very positive feedback from the patients
themselves.
"The review is an invaluable guide to the views of our patients
on all aspects of their experience at South Bristol Community
Hospital and we will use this feedback in our continuing programme
to improve standards of care."
