ITV This Morning celebrates nurses and midwives at St Michael’s Hospital
Presenter Dr Larisa Corda interviewed midwives and nurses to
hear why they joined the professions and what it's like to work at
St Michael's, whilst patients shared their experiences of fantastic
care at the hospital.Nurses, midwives and their patients at St
Michael's Hospital in Bristol shared their inspirational stories on
ITV This Morning today (30 January 2020) as part of celebrations
for the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.
Dr Larisa met staff from throughout the hospital including the
central delivery suite, postnatal wards and gynaecology and some of
the interviews were part of a segment on the show today.
Sarah Windfeld, head of midwifery, said: "I am proud and
delighted that This Morning chose St Michael's Hospital to show
what a wonderful job our midwives do every day helping and
supporting mothers and their families at such an important time. As
midwives, we are privileged to share with families this special
time when their baby is born."
Sarah was interviewed with Sue French, the midwife who delivered
her son Tom at St Michael's Hospital in 1991. Both Sarah and Sue,
pictured right with Dr Larisa Corda, still work at the Trust.
"It was amazing to be interviewed with Sue and a little bit
emotional too as it brought back so many happy memories," added
Sarah.
Sue has worked at the Trust since 1981. Her mum was a nurse and
her sister is a midwife in northern England. Sue said: "Being
interviewed by ITV This Morning was a very special thing to do and
really exciting. I really do love my job and feel so very lucky to
work in such a fantastic team."
Also interviewed were mum and daughter Liz and Lauren Mackley
who both work at St Michael's. Liz, a midwife in antenatal, trained
in Bristol with Sarah and has worked at the Trust since 1981. Both
of her children were born at St Michael's, including Lauren who
qualified as a staff nurse two-and-a-half years ago after first
working as a nursing assistant seven years ago.
Liz said: "It was nice to be there as mother and daughter. I
feel very proud having a daughter in the hospital as well. We both
felt honoured to represent the Trust where we've both worked for a
long time."
Lauren said: "I was really nervous but Dr Larisa made us feel
very at ease, as did the whole team. I l love the fact that I work
at the same place as my mum and I'm proud to work in the NHS."
Sue Sheriton, nursery nurse on the transitional care ward, said:
"I was a bag of nerves but after I did the interview I felt very
proud. It was really nice. I love working with the fantastic team
at St Michael's."
Linda Bond, midwifery assistant, has worked at the Trust since
1978 and is still working now aged 74. She said: "It was really
nice to be interviewed as I've been working in the NHS for so many
years. I'm really happy to still be working at St Michael's."

new parents Max and Emma Randall and their newborn twin girls, Ivy
and Matilda
Elaine Lindley retired as a
midwife in September 2019 but has returned to St Michael's Hospital
as a ward clerk
