About Us

BIRCH logo

The Bioengineering, Innovation and Research Hub (BIRCH) based in St Michael's Hospital was formed in 2012 following the merger of two groups.

We are a team of Clinical Scientists who work with clinical staff, radiographers, sonographers, engineers and other staff groups to support clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US) services within UHBW, external Trusts and NHS screening services in the Southwest region.

In addition to MRI and US support, the team also have specialist skills in image processing and scientific computing.

Medical Physics & Bioengineering is an accredited centre for  the National School of Healthcare Science Scientific Training programme (NSHCS STP), and the team provides Imaging with Non-Ionising  (INIR) physics training to trainees  from the Southwest region.

We also deliver MRI and ultrasound physics lectures to thelocal Fellows of the Royal College of  Radiologists(FRCR) and MRI safety training to radiographers and other staff groups at UHBW and North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT).

We actively support research and innovation  in MRI and US  within UHBW, NBT and collaborate with external partners  such as the National Physical Laboratory.

The team undertake a wide range of professional practice activities including representation on the Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine's  (IPEM) Magnetic Resonance Special Interest Group (MR-SIG), Ultrasound and non-ionising SIG (UNIRSIG), and the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) Council

Previous work by the Biophysics Group, prior to the merger in 2012, including (nanoscience/toxicology & 3D printing) can be found here.
