Having trained in general surgery AJP undertook specialist
training in cardiac surgery training in Oxford Heart Centre and
Papworth Hospital. He obtained his CCST during this time then went
to San Francisco, USA to undertake specialist training in
congenital cardiac surgery where he worked under Dr F Hanley.
Having completed the fellow training programme he was appointed to
the position of Assistant Professor and Attending Surgeon at UCSF
in 1997, a position he held until 1999 when he returned to Bristol.
Since 2005 he has been the lead congenital cardiac surgeon at
Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. During this time he has
introduced a programme for the surgical treatment of children with
hypoplastic left heart syndrome and programmes for the introduction
of new valve technologies which are less invasive for patients. As
well as his clinical duties he also lectures on international
surgical training courses and has published widely on various
aspects of congenital cardiac surgery.
