Referrals
The major role of the Occupational Health Service is to
provide independent advice to managers and
employees on:
● the health of people at work;
● the quality of the working environment;
● health risks of the workplace;
● the occupational implications of risks to health that can
occur at work and the ability of employees, through reasons of
their health, to undertake the work.
It is important to understand that the role is advisory,
and that decisions relating to the management of an employment
issue are the responsibility of the manager or employer.
Professional integrity, clinical confidentiality, setting of
standards and adhering to them, quality assurance of work
undertaken, audit and clinical governance of the service are
integral components of the work all occupational health staff
undertake.
In order to ensure that both employer and employee gain
the maximum benefit from a referral to an Occupational Health
Practitioner we have produced the following documents.
1. Occupational Health Referral Request
Form to be completed by the manager in order to
provide the Occupational Health Practitioner with as
comprehensive picture as possible for the reason for the referral,
having been discussed with the employee.
2. Guidance Notes for Managers (UHB, NBT, Weston) as background advice on completing
an Occupational Health Referral Request Form.
3. Guidance for Employees (UHB, NBT, Weston) providing an explanation on how the
process works and how it can help them.
