University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is pleased
that the Health Protection Agency figures show a reduction in the
number of cases of clostridium difficile (C. diff) and
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in our
hospitals.
The Trust has achieved a 64 % reduction in C. diff cases this
quarter (April - June 2009) compared to the same quarter last
year.
The figures also show a reduction of 63% in the number of cases
of MRSA for this quarter when compared to the same quarter last
year.
This improvement is a direct result of the proactive measures we
have taken to control the spread of infection.
Christine Perry, Assistant Chief Nurse and Director of Infection
Prevention and Control, said: We are pleased with the
findings of the HPA, however any healthcare associated infection is
unacceptable to the Trust and we are working hard to minimise them
in all of our hospitals.
We have taken a number of proactive measures to deal with these
infections across the Trust, such as recruiting additional cleaning
teams, implementing hydrogen peroxide vapour decontamination and
tightening up on antibiotic prescribing.
The Trust will continue to take steps to eradicate preventable
healthcare associated infection in its hospitals.
