Nominees: The Bristol Testicular Cancer Team

Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre (BHOC), part of University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, has been nominated for two awards in this years Excellence in Oncology Awards, to be presented by the British Oncological Association and Pfizer on Tuesday, 9th November 2010.

Jancis Kinsman, Advanced Practice Therapy Radiographer at BHOC, has been selected for the short list in the category Best Patient Support Initiative in Oncology for her animated film idea, One of a Kind, in which children who received radiotherapy at BHOC took part in an Aardman animation to show others what it is like to have the treatment.

Jancis said:  I felt that a short animated film with characters that young children could identify with was the best way to communicate to them what it is like to haveJancis radiotherapy. The film is a valuable tool for preparing children and their families for radiotherapy and complements the wonderful work already done by specialist paediatric radiographers, oncologists and play specialists around the country.

Also nominated, as Oncology Team of the Year, is the Bristol Testicular Cancer Service Team based at BHOC, the Supra-network team for the South West.   The team has implemented a series of changes to provide the highest standards of care and ensures the service is patient centred by working closely with their patient group.

Says Sue Brand , Germ Cell Clinical Nurse Specialist:  To help raise awareness of testicular cancer and get the message across to patients and the public, the patient group and the team formed a charity called Its In The Bag, part of Above & Beyond charities.  With its distinct identity and logo, Its In The Bag actively raises funds to ensure innovations and projects can be delivered.

The Excellence in Oncology Awards recognises and rewards best practice in oncology management, education and patient care throughout the UK.  A collaboration of the British Oncological Association (BOA) and Pfizer, the awards are now in their fifth year.

The awards are judged by a multidisciplinary panel of eminent national oncology healthcare professionals and representatives from cancer patient groups. The panel is chaired by Richard Sainsbury, President of the BOA and Consultant Breast Surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The 2010 awards ceremony will take place during the NCRI Cancer Conference in Liverpool on Tuesday, 9th November.
