Trust Appoints New Executive

University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UH Bristol) has appointed a new chief operating officer, who will have responsibility for overseeing day-to-day management of its eight city centre hospitals.

Irene Scott joins from Surrey & Sussex Healthcare Trust, where she is deputy chief executive officer and director of nursing.

She succeeds Dr Graham Rich, who stepped up to become UHBristol's chief executive last month.

Irene brings to UHBristol a wealth of experience in management and leadership, having served on the boards of a number of NHS healthcare organisations during the past 21 years.

Those include the Nurse Directors Association UK, where she was chief executive, and Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Trust, London, where she was director of nursing.

She has served on a number of national working parties and committees, including the Cabinet Office Honours Committee, and is currently a member of the Department of Health's UK Modernising Nursing Careers committee.

Irene is widely published. She has co-written a book and is also the author of a variety of international academic papers.

Irene, who has two children, began her NHS career in 1972 as a trainee nurse at Withington Hospital, Manchester.

As a ward sister at the age of 21, Irene specialised in care of the elderly and retains a passion for excellence in clinical care.

She later moved into senior nursing leadership roles before being appointed to her first Board director position at the Christie Hospital, Manchester.

She said: "The opportunity to continue to develop my career in such a prestigious organisation as UHBristol is wonderful.

"I feel very privileged and look forward to working with and for the staff in achieving its goal to continue to provide excellent patient care and become a world class organisation."

UHBristol chief executive Dr Graham Rich and Trust chairman John Savage said: "We are very pleased that Irene will be joining us in March 2008, at such an exciting time for the organisation as it becomes a Foundation Trust."
