14 April 2009
People from across Bristol and the South West are being given an
exclusive chance for a behind-the-scenes look at the regions newest
hospital.
The new £60m Bristol Heart Institute, part of University
Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trusts central Bristol hospitals
complex, is throwing open its doors to the public on Saturday 25
April, between 11am and 3pm.
This is a rare opportunity for people to see a state-of-the-art
hospital building before the patients move in this May.
The Bristol Heart Institute will for the first time bring
cardiology and cardiac surgery services under one roof, allowing
staff to provide more seamless care for heart patients. In an
average year the centre will carry out around 1,700 heart
operations, perform 4,000 cardiology procedures, and treat around
15,000 outpatients.
Dr Peter Wilde, Head of the Division of Specialised Services at
University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, says the new
centre represents the future of healthcare.
He explains: The Bristol Heart Institute has been designed very
much in partnership with patients, staff and the people of Bristol
and the South West. We wanted to give people an opportunity
to see inside this stunning new facility in a way that simply would
not be possible when it opens to patients later this year.
The centre will also include three catheter laboratories and a
state of the art hybrid theatre, three inpatient wards for cardiac
patients, a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Coronary Care Unit
and an outpatients department.
At the Open Day, visitors will have the opportunity to see the
catheter laboratories, Coronary Care Unit, wards and the
spectacular atrium, on a special guided route. Theres no need to
book. Visitors should turn up on the day and members of the
Bristol Heart Institute team will be on hand to answer
questions.
Refreshments will be available to buy and activities will be
provided for children.
There is limited parking. Parking is available at the NCP car
park on Trenchard Street.
