A team of nurses from University Hospitals Bristol NHS
Foundation Trust has been shortlisted as finalists in the Infection
Control Award category for the prestigious Nursing Times Awards
2009.
The multi-disciplinary nursing team was formed in mid-2008 to
reduce the number of cases of Clostridium difficile (C. diff)
within the Trust, and to implement management improvements in the
care of patients with the infection. The teams work has made
a significant difference already over the past year, with cases of
C. diff from April to August falling by 65% in 2009 compared to the
same time period in 2008.
Director of Infection Prevention and Control Christine Perry
says: "It is fantastic that the hard work of all our staff in
reducing infections has been recognised. It is a bonus
to be shortlisted for this award in that what we have achieved has
been recognised outside of the Trust. This has been a team
effort that has involved nursing, medical cleaning, pharmacy and
estates staff all working together for the benefit of
patients."
Chief Nurse Alison Moon adds: "The safety of our patients
specifically with regard to healthcare acquired infections, is
paramount to the way we work within the Trust. I am delighted with
the significant improvements we have seen over the past year, our
staff have worked incredibly hard to minimise the risks to our
patients. This work continues and will remain our focus as it is an
area where we will always strive to improve and we know is of huge
importance to our patients and staff alike."
The team from UH Bristol has been selected from more than 500
entries. The Nursing Times says: "Our finalists this
year have all contributed to raising the standard of healthcare
through their commitment and creativity, and we are delighted to
recognise their work."
The winners will be announced on Wednesday 18 November at
Londons Park Lane Hilton Hotel.
