University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is welcoming a
new non-executive director to its board.
Sarah Blackburn begins a three-year term of office on the
Foundation Trusts board from 1 June 2009.
Sarah holds a doctorate in business administration from Brunel
University (Henley Management College). She is a fellow of both the
Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the
Institute of Internal Auditors. She is chief executive of the
Wayside Network " a consultancy specialising in governance, risk
management and the development of assurance services. Over the
course of 20 years in assurance Sarah has been director of internal
audit and risk management in three FTSE 100 companies and one
public service organisation. She is a non-executive director and
Audit Committee chairman at the Identity and Passport Service where
she also chairs the Data Governance Board sub-Committee. She was a
Commissioner (non-executive director) at the Healthcare Commission
from its inception and she chaired its Audit Committee and an
expert reference group on governance. She also served on the
Investigations Committee.
Sarah moved to Bristol in 2007. Her husband is a partner in a GP
practice in the south of the city. Her elder daughter studied
medicine at Bristol University (and worked at University Hospitals
Bristol NHS Foundation Trust). She has a special interest in access
to diagnosis and effective treatment for adults and children living
with primary and secondary lymphoedema.
Sarah says: I am looking forward to working with colleagues at
the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and
supporting its mission to provide patient care, education and
research of the highest quality.

has been appointed for her governance expertise and experience as
an Audit Committee Chair. She will make hugely valuable
contributions to the Trust and her range of experience and
knowledge will add greatly to the effectiveness of our work.
The Trust manages nine city centre hospitals: Bristol Royal
Infirmary, Bristol Heart Institute, Bristol Eye Hospital, Bristol
Haematology & Oncology Centre, Bristol Royal Hospital for
Children, St Michaels Hospital, University of Bristol Dental
Hospital, the Homeopathic Hospital and Bristol General
Hospital. It also manages the Central Health Clinic.
