University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is launching a
programme of events to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding
of the Bristol Eye Hospital.
Bristol Eye Hospital is one of the country's leading specialist
hospitals, at the forefront of ophthalmology and has been serving
the people of Bristol since 1810.
Eye care and treatment has seen considerable advancements during
the hospitals history, which now provides cornea, glaucoma, retina
and emergency care as well as other specialties. Today, the
hospital treats 78,000 outpatients and 20,000 accident and
emergency admissions.
Derek Tole, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, said: We are
extremely proud of the achievements of the past 200 years; the
Bristol Eye Hospital continues to be a centre of excellence for
innovation and the delivery of world class patient care.
In order to celebrate 200 years of visionary care, the Trust
will hold a number of events throughout the year. These will
include a national ophthalmic conference for nurses, an academic
symposium in the summer, as well as an open day for patients, staff
and the public.
To mark the start of the celebrations, the Trust will display a
banner from the Bristol Eye Hospital facing towards the citys main
shopping area from Tuesday 2 February 2010, which has kindly been
sponsored by the Trusts charity Above and Beyond.
As part of the anniversary year, the Trust is appealing for
interesting stories/photos from former patients, staff and anyone
connected with the Bristol Eye Hospital. Please contact: Stephanie
