The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) honoured the
Bristol Heart Institute (BHI) at Tuesdays South West Town and
Country Design Awards. This came a year to the day after the BHI
was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal.
The ceremony, which was held at The Winter Gardens in
Weston-super-Mare, saw the building winning the The Ibstock Premier
Award - the top accolade. It also won best Public Sector
building.
The £61m development, part of University Hospitals Bristol NHS
Foundation Trusts central Bristol hospitals complex, was designed
by Bristol-based CODA Architects.
CODA Architect Director, Craig Bennett, said: Were delighted
that the design has been acknowledged among such strong competition
in our region. The internal environment - sunlight, colour,
views out were very important to us and the central atrium is a
calm space which provides a reassuring welcome. Its been an honour
to be involved in creating this legacy for Bristol.
Andy Headdon, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trusts
Strategic Development Programme Director said: Its fantastic that
the BHI has won these two prestigious awards. Not only is it a
fitting tribute to all of the partners involved, including the
architects and builders, but also the patients and staff who were
involved at design planning stage.
Paul Fletcher, Jury chair, said: Bristol Heart Institute is one
of the best kept secrets of recently opened NHS buildings and
represents an unquestionable success of the collaboration between
client, contractor and architect in delivering a building in which
people are delighted to work, and users find accessible, relaxing
and an aid to recovery.
