Performance
Making best use of our resources to improve patient care
Research generates evidence that improves the care that we can
offer to our patients, and clinical outcomes are better in research
active hospitals. As a research active teaching trust we are
committed to leading and taking part in research so that the
results can be adopted into practice or developed further,
improving clinical care.
We support the Government's national aims of increasing the
number of patients who have access to research in the NHS and
social care, and enhancing the nation's attractiveness as a host
for research. The Government's Plan for Growth (2011),
implemented by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR),
outlines these aims.
We seek to use our research funding as effectively as we can.
One way we do this is by setting up trials efficiently and
recruiting participants as planned.
Setting up trials efficiently: performance initiating
research
Over the past six years we have significantly reduced the time
it takes to set up clinical trials. Nearly 8 out of 10 trials
we open now recruit the first participant within just over two
months from the date we agreed we could do the trial in our
hospitals. We measure the time from receipt of a valid
application to the first patient consented that goes on to be
recruited.

Recruiting participants as planned: performance delivering
commercial research
Our life sciences partners invest significantly in the UK
economy to develop new treatments for patients in the NHS and
across the world. When we take part in a commercial trial, we
agree how many participants we will recruit and within what
timeframe. We measure how well we do to meet those
targets.
