Cardiac Surgery Research Team

Cardiovascular Research Unit - location C502 (next to MRI suite)

Bristol Heart Institute, Bristol Royal Infirmary

Research Lead:  Manuela Antognozzi

Research Sister: Emma Hopkins

We work on a variety of cardiac surgery clinical trials, ranging from observational studies to Randomised Control Trials (RCTs); where the randomisation mostly takes place during surgery.  Our role takes us to pre-op assessment clinic, Cardiac Intensive Care (CICU), cardiac wards, and cardiac theatres.  We screen all cardiac surgery patients for their suitability to take part in our current studies.  For those who are eligible and wish to take part we go through the informed consent process.  Once patients are enrolled into a trial we follow study protocols to collect data and samples for the duration of their stay and follow up period.

Our feedback from the patients involved in research is very positive and the majority of patients seem to enjoy the experience of participation and the extra care and attention received.
