I need contraception

I want to discuss my contraceptive choices

All of our clinics can offer your support in choosing the right method of contraception for you. However, not all of the long-acting methods (implants and coils) are available from all of our clinics.

If you are being seen in clinic, and would prefer a long-acting method of contraception, the nurse or doctor will be able to advise you about getting an appointment for a long-acting method, and will be able to offer you a method of contraception that you can use during the time you are waiting for your long-acting method to be organised.

There is no charge for any contraception issued by the NHS.

Choices: Do you want advice on your contraception options? Would you like to start a contraceptive? We can help you decide what contraception would suit you best.

Emergency contraception:

If you've had unprotected sex and want emergency contraception, please make sure you come and see us as soon as possible so that we can discuss your options. This might involve an emergency contraceptive pill or an emergency IUD (intra-uterine device- also known as a coil).

You may also be able to get emergency contraception at your local pharmacy or walk-in centre. It will be free if you are under 25 years old.

If you are a GP and would like to refer a patient for an emergency IUD, please click on this link for our referral details.

Condoms:

We have a wide range of condoms available which are free to collect. Our range of condoms includes natural, trim, large, kingsize, flavoured, extra safe and latex-free. We also run a condom card programme - just show the card at reception and pick up your condoms.

Female condoms are also available.

Pills:

If you would like to start on a contraceptive pill, or need a re-prescription of pills, you can attend any of our clinics.

Contraceptive injection: If you would like to start the Contraceptive injection, or need a repeat one given, you can attend any of our clinics.

For routine repeat prescriptions, you can also see your GP.

Contraceptive implants and IUD/IUS (coils):

We are happy to discuss these options with you; however we are only able to offer these to a specific group of patients.

You will need to see a clinician who is specifically trained in fitting implants or IUDs/IUS, so you will need to request this at the time of booking your appointment to ensure you are booked into the correct clinic.

If you are under 18 and would like an implant or coil then we can do this for you- you just need to call us and make an appointment.

If you are over 18 years old, and would like one of these devices fitted, you should discuss this first with your GP. If your GP can fit implants/IUD/IUS, we will need to have a referral letter from them before we can offer you an appointment. Your GP referral letter will come to our Central Health Clinic and be assessed. You will then be offered an appointment at a suitable clinic.

If you are a GP and would like to refer a patient for LARC method at BSHC please see this referral form.

Depending on your specific circumstances and medical history, this appointment may be at one of our Community clinics, or the Central Health Clinic.
