South Wales & South West Managed Clinical Network

A single Managed Clinical Network (MCN) for cleft lip and/or palate services has been established for South Wales and the South West of England.

The purpose of the MCN is, through the Managed Clinical Network Board, to organise and coordinate the delivery of an integrated cleft lip and/or palate service with two lead centres based on the main sites of Morriston Hospital, Swansea and University of Bristol Dental Hospital.

Service Philosophy

The philosophy of cleft lip and/or palate care is underpinned by a team approach providing holistic care to the family into which a child with a cleft lip and/or palate is born. The network will provide multi-disciplinary specialised care/treatment for at least the first 20 years of life to produce optimal physical function, psychological adjustment and aesthetics.

Specific Objectives

These are to:

  • Provide timely and relevant ante natal advice.
  • Co-ordinate the total care of the patient over at least the first 20 years of life.
  • Ensure that the cleft lip and/or palate is well repaired and the child's growth, development and function maximised.
  • Put in place arrangements for ongoing care and treatment of adult patients where clinically indicated.
  • Ensure that care is organised and provided in such a way that it:
  • Recognises the nature of the original birth defect.
  • Optimises facial appearance.
  • Optimises speech.
  • Enables appropriate occlusal and dental growth to the highest standard.
  • Optimises the psychological well being of the patient and family.
  • Provides flexible arrangements for ongoing care.
  • Sustains co-operation with the Cleft Lip And Palate Association (CLAPA) on a local regional and national basis.
  • Works within the clinical protocols and treatment guidelines developed and agreed for the service.
  • Provides for the development and dissemination of measured outcomes against CSAG standards.
