Treatment planning

4Treatment planning involves devising the optimum radiotherapy beam distribution to deliver the prescribed radiotherapy dose to the volume to be treated (usually a tumour), whilst minimising the dose to nearby organs at risks (eg eyes, brain stem, spinal cord).

Treatment plans are produced for a wide range of highly complex treatment sites.

Advanced techniques such as Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) are used to produce the best possible treatment plans.

The department is involved in several clinical trials which aim to investigate how different planning methods could improve patient outcomes.
